What a difference a few hours makes! It sounds like Martha started off today pretty slowly, but by the time we saw her just after lunch, she was very alert, and her memory was great. She was also showing less aphasia (word substitution). She had several visitors, including Amanda and me and two other couples who came and went. She seemed really pleased to interact with everyone. One old friend who came by sang with her. I think we were all amazed that she didn't have any trouble singing the words.

Tonight, when Martin and I went by a little before 8pm, she was awake watching Lawrence Welk on TV. She seemed to really enjoy speaking with us and showed no signs of aphasia! She seemed almost completely oriented, except that she didn't realize how late in the day it was. She and I and the nurse spoke about her food preferences, and we decided she needs to be on a regular diet. She was also hungry so they brought her yogurt as a snack.

Martha is still weak, but she seems to be a lot improved and more alert tonight. We hope she continues to have more good days!

Amanda seems a bit better every day but her recovery will obviously be slow, too. She was able to get out once today, but it really wore her out. Her doctor has been having her reduce her dosage of several medications, which we are hoping may help her continue to feel better. (Each of the medications makes her feel pretty rotten sometimes.)
